John 20:25 “…So he said to them, ‘Unless I see in His hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and put my hand into His side, I will not believe.’”

Thomas had just been told that, in his absence, Jesus had appeared to the disciples  after His crucifixion. Thomas was still in shock in the aftermath of the crucifixion and he refused to believe such an outlandish story.   Eight days later, while the disciples were again gathered in an upper room along with Thomas, Jesus reappeared which confirmed his faith and proved that what he was told before was true. We have all heard the old saying “seeing is believing,” Well I guess we can credit Thomas for that little jewel.

What We Should Know

Thomas had refused to accept valid evidence presented to him by his trusted colleagues. The most valuable part of any court trial today comes in the form of evidence. When you see a court trial depicted on television today, the attorneys begin by describing the charges and then they begin  presenting convincing evidence to prove their case. There is another old saying “a picture is worth a thousand words,” But sometimes a picture is not available so we depend on the experiences of credible witnesses. For example, no one has ever actually seen a tyrannosaurus, but we have seen the evidence through scientists who have put the pieces  together. No one is alive who witnessed the battle of the Alamo, but stories and written accounts have verified it. Thus, we have  to rely on faith. Hebrews 11:1 “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” Our Christian experience is one of faith…..our Christian faith is the evidence of things unseen but which are recorded in God’s Word by those who have seen.
